There was no 'other system' at the time!!!!  Or the system, if you will,
was to do it yourself.  George Eastman's major 'invention' (some would
say his only invention) was the photofinishing industry.  Not only was
25-cents a genuine chunk of change in 1888, but to do either amateur or
professional photography required dedication & craftsmanship - mix
chemistry, load & unload relatively primitive and variable sensitized
product, get decent exposure, do your own printing.  There was no
'out' to send it to.  Even us stereo freaks don't work quite that hard
for results today.
