I don't follow you here.  I think you are assuming hardware which I
would consider exotic.  eg I don't know anyone in Regina interested in
3d much less actually actually owning hardware.

I've been in digital imaging most of my life( graduated 1968), 
therefore I consider scanning routine :-)

But I did mention using a micrometer (typically 0.1% accuracy).

Centroiding is overkill, but I'm sceptical of 1% being satisfactory. 
For certain uses maybe it is.  I bow to experience.

In my world better than 0.001% is more like it :-)


Is 1% a rule of thumb?
