This thread has gotten around to the obviously practical; balloons. Back when
I was a brand-new 2nd LT., I went to a symposium on photogrammetry & balloons.
I think it was 1969...
There's a gentleman in Arizona somewhere that has a business specializing in
tethered balloon photogrammetry (less than 300 feet, I think).
He contacted me in the past six months, asked for a demo copy of my software;
I haven't heard from him since.
There are people in the Northwest and Midwest that use tethered balloons for
photogrammetric analyses of traffic accident scenes. (Usually long after the
fact.)
Photogrammetry & rockets is usually camera on the ground, rocket in the air.
(It's called Ballistic Photogrammetry.) I've got a Ballistic Camera, it's
about 275 pounds (double hernia in a box), and was manufactured by the WILD
company in Switzerland. Original cost $77,000. When converted to a telescope,
it's remarkably effective for looking at Co-eds up to a mile away.
The WILD BC-4 was originally used by Helmut Schmid at Aberdeen Proving Grounds
in the 1950's. Later used at White Sands & Kwajelein Atoll. I've got one of
the very few ever sold by the U.S. Government. It's gorgeous, it's white;
and as useful as the elephant of the same color.
