Here is Sanyo's press release about their new system to
broadcast 3D TV:

Sanyo, NTV Develop 3D Digital Broadcast System
09:58 a.m. Mar 12, 1997 EST

TOKYO - Japan's Sanyo Electric Company and Nippon Television Network
said on Tuesday they had developed a new system for broadcasting 3D
images and would start test transmissions later this year.
The system uses progressive-scan technology developed by NTV and
requires viewers to have decoders in their TV sets as well as special
glasses to see the three-dimensional images.
The two firms said they
planned to launch test broadcasts this summer to gauge the commercial
possibilities of the technology. But they said details of the scale of
the investment and possible timing of the start of commercial 3D
broadcasts had yet to be decided.
Under the system, broadcasters will
combine right-eye and left-eye images into one signal that will be
transmitted using progressive scan technology and broken down into the
two images again by the decoder. NTV, a nationwide broadcaster,
announced the development of digital progressive-scan technology in
January last year. The technology is a way of broadcasting images in a
more computer-compatible way than the interlace method currently used
for most television broadcasting.
