Detroit Monthly Report (March)
- From: P3D Dr. George A. Themelis <fj834@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: Detroit Monthly Report (March)
- Date: Fri, 14 Mar 1997 11:34:27 -0500 (EST)
Last Wednesday it was not a good night for the Cleveland section of the
Detroit club (Jim and myself), that's why this report is late :)
Going in, I was in first place, 8 points ahead from the second. The
subject was "Along the Road". I had 5 good slides. I was sure about the 2
but could not decide on the 3d. Finally, I put in this reflection on a
building (a clean slide with little depth) and used the other 2 (from the
5) as "warm up" slides, meaning slides to warm the judges (who don't know
that they are not part of the competition) shown at first.
My last-minute entry (reflection) won 2nd place while the other 2 (the ones
I considered "winners") not only did not get anything, they were even rated
_below_ average!!! The ironic part is that the 2 "warm up" slides got
enough points for 3d place each!!!! Don't you just love these competitions?
So, for that night I got 7 point while I could have 13. 7 points would
have been OK under different circumstances, but my main competitor did
great with one first place and 2 HMs, a total of 12 points. Thus, he
managed to reduce our difference from 8 to only 3 points.
His first-place slide was a fantastic twin SLR pair down a road during
fall. Use of polarizers had turned the sky dark and the leaves were
glowing fall colors. Use of ultra-sharp Nikon lenses, a bit hyper looking
down the road, made this one of the best stereo slides of the season.
Next month the assignment is "Tabletops". This is a critical night. If my
opponent does better than me, then everything will be decided in the month
after next, which is the last competition night and is "Open". He has
proved that he can take effective tabletops and through this year he has
won a couple of awards with tabletops. But so have I!
I am in a mind block. I have a bit of time but no ideas! Times like that
I wish that table-top master Stan White was my father! The clock it
ticking... The pressure is mounting... I just hope that my opponent is
feeling the same pressure and his mind is empty too!
Until next month... stay tuned!!!
