I have a Fargo Photo-Fun and the media cost for it is (or was the last
time I ordered) about 75 cents per 4*6 sheet. Not exactly cheap. My previous color printer was the Epson Color Stylus I - which I think I calculated at about 25 cents a sheet for the "official" paper. 

The Photo-Fun, although only capapble of about 200dpi has a semi-full
color bleed (if that's the right terminology) which can stand up 
to printing two halves of a Holmes stereoview on a single sheet and
viewing on my antique hand held. I'll have to take some samples
over to the upcoming DFW NSA and see if they look reasonable in one
of Alan's super duper modern viewers (if he brings one).

The only place the Photo-Fun kinda falls down are on large areas of
uniform color, where you can sometimes see some blotchy/splotchy ness.
However, for normally "busy" images, they are not evident unless one
is looking for them. One nice thing about the Foto Fun is that it lays
down a 4th layer which is a uv resistant coating (they say). In the
year.5 or so I've had the printer, I've not noticed any particular
problems with fading of some images in an unlighted display case 
exposed to normal level interior fluorscent hallway lighting.
