Questions about TDC 116

The slide carrier in my TDC 116 has a front and a back channel. The front
channel holds the Realist format slides at the proper level for projection.
The rear channel is about .25 inch lower than the front. What is it for? 2x2
mounts maybe?

Each channel of the carrier is about .25 inch wide. This means that an
ordinary cardboard mounted slide slops around quite a bit requiring
refocusing from slid to slide. The RBT mounts don't have that problem. How
does one deal with the cardboard mounts?
