My own $.02 worth:

To ensure that bellows and septum move together, the septum should be
constructed of the same substance as the bellows.

This is the solution in a wooden view camera I examined.  The septum is
removable because the camera has two lens boards: a stereo front, and a mono.
 It's septum is not only constructed of the same fabric, but also has ribs
like the bellows.  Furthermore, it tapers in height just as do the sides of
the bellows (parallel to the septum).
