Hello all from Texas again (sigh).

I investigated this problem a number of years ago whilst trying to figure
out a way to do reasonable cost computer animation in my graphics classes.

I looked at a Panasonic (I think - it could have been JVC) VCR which could
do single frame "exposures" - the thought being that you'd record individual
frames but play it back full speed. Results: very jumpy - not usable.

We finally opted for a writable laserdisk system (expensive!) That worked
perfectly (after some bugs were worked out).

Today, one *could* possibly manage full animation (or alternately
a stable single frame image) via CD-R (cdrom) recording. The main
problem there is that for animation especially 600meg doesn't go very
far. OTOH, much higher storage devices (such as DVD) are on the near
horizon. And of course there are improvements being made if you can
stand lossy compression (JPEG/MPEG).

We are on the verge of buying a CD-R system, but the market is moving
so swiftly it's hard to make a decision. (I've even thought about
perhaps making all of the back archives of *3D available on CD-ROM,
at cost, although I wouldn't want to get into the business of doing
one-off CD-ROMS taking up all my *spare* time :-) However, if we could
get to the point of doing a master, then maybe it would be possible to
get 'em duplicated at a reasonable cost. Dunno though ---

THANKS
