Erlys, the best dupes are in-camera dupes! The trick is to figure out
which shots you will want to dupe before you see the slides! ;)
Seriously, copies are virtually never as good as the originals. I seem
to recall someone mentioning once they would not share dupes with others
because they just don't measure up. It seems to me that good quality
color reproduction in any medium is a challenging task, and slides are
no exception. Slide dupes normally have more contrast, less sharpness,
and not as much richness and vibrancy in the colors. This is not to say
a dupe cannot be pleasing (especially to someone who hasn't seen the
original ;) ), but you will probably have a strong preference for your
originals. Stereo slides add yet another layer of challenges with which
to contend.
I am currently having some dupes made at a local lab. Knowing they had
previously made dupes for another local stereo photographer, I figured
they would have a good idea what to do. On their first attempt, however,
they only duped 1/2 of each pair!
A good introduction to some stereo slide duping issues is the DrT/Jon
Golden article in Dalia's last regular issue of Inside-3D. Gary Nored
recently clued me in to some additional potential problems. Perhaps
Gary could post a copy of his comments to the list (or if he didn't
save a copy I'll forward what he sent me, on his OK).
Kodak will not dupe stereo slides, but the Reel-3D catalog does list some
sources for slide duping. And with some time and effort, you may be able
to properly train your local full-service lab to do a good job.
Hope this helps,
Paul Talbot
