I've done quite a few stereo renderings and have had good results
using the 1/30 rule. Measurement units are arbitrary, the 1/30 rule
seems to work well. The I believe the default focal length of your
virtual camera is "normal", or about 50mm.

I like to render in a wider aspect ratio. I design
the scene in 1.333 (aspect ratio of computer screen and European format
7p slides) but I render at 1.5 aspect ratio (full frame 35mm film).
This gives you spare image for adjusting the stereo window after
it is rendered. You can have your computer file transferred to slide
film by a service bureau and then mount it in a 7p stereo mount
with plenty of window adjustment leeway, or crop the computer image
file down using Photo Shop like programs for adjusting the window
for anaglyphs or side by side presentation. If you are going to
make it into a slide you should render at high resolution. I use
3000x2000, and yes it does take a long time, even with a 200mhz
Pentium.
