Good question. Both work, both are OK in my book...

I went to a local printer and chose the kind of board I wanted (similar
to the cardboard like backing of notepads, except that it has a white
face) and asked them to cut several large sheets of this material to
antique stereo card size, then they used a die they already had to cut
in the rounded corners. I forget the exact price, but it was something
like $30 or $40 for 300 final cards.

You nailed it... The handling of the cards would quickly damage pointy
corners. The round edges do provide a measure of protection. However,
they are not "necessary". Had I not found the print shop I did find, I
would not have rounded corners. The others I contacted wanted $100's
more because they did not have such a cutting blade, and would have to
have one made...

I like white in most cases, but there are images that do better with
other color backgrounds... I think it's an artistic decision for each
individual view. (If you have that kind of latitude.)

It's good to see some interest in stereo cards. Come one, come all,
join APEC (III?).
