The difference between the original and a duplicate can be only
picked up in a (good) viewer.  If the duplicate is good, you cannot
usually tell the difference using the $3 viewer or in projection.
I have enough good originals for viewer use and only use slide 
"copying" to improve slides for projection.  Improve can mean
any of the following or combinations of these:

- Enlarge/crop/change composition
- Change exposure (usually lighten up).
- Duplicate "sandwitch" slides so I only have one slide to
  deal with.
- Change color balance.
- Copy in different base (e.g. negative)
