I agree with your conclusions, that the press release statement was more
hyperbole than breakthrough. I took classes on Visual Perception and the
eye position does play a HUGE role in perception.
One very simple proof:
Close one eye and look up and down. Notice that the world stays
still.
Now (GENTLY!) push at the lower outside eyelid of your open eye. You
just want to move the eye a little. Now the world swings wildly! You
have just moved the eye but the brain says, "I didn't move the eye
muscles myself, therefore the sky is falling."
You can get really nauseous very quickly doing this simple
demonstration!
