Before this topic goes to email, I just wanted to say that there was something 
like this set up at a SIGGRAPH meeting a couple of years ago.  It was a virtual 
setup and you wore headphones.  You moved around in a virtual room and when you 
approached a corner there was an instrument there and the sound really did seem 
3D.  As you moved away from it, the sound faded, etc.  It was rough but you 
could definitely see the future possibilities!
