3d sound

I am working on something now in TrueSpace, a "3d" modelling
software, where I plan to incorporate 3d sound. I will probably
record the sound in stereo, and bring it into my sound software
called Cool Edit by Syntrillium software (limitware that can be
unlocked for $50 I think -- www.syntrillium.com).

In Cool Edit I can select the right and left channels (no front/rear
surround sound here...) and manipulate it in a number of ways.
I can decrease the volume of selections that I may want to
sound farther away, or increase the volume of selections I may
want to sound close up. This is a basic feature of the software.
Besides amplitude, there are options for adjusting pitch, speed,
and all sorts of other goodies like echoes, reverb, and the list
goes on. It's a really neat software, and is very easy to use. I
haven't yet registered my copy, so I'm only able to use 2 features
at a time, one being the save feature. I'm going to register prior
to working on my 3d sound, but when the project is finished (I am
doing both a true 3-dimensional video and a 2d (3d modelled)
version), I will put it on the web. I plan to submit both versions to
Caligari (the makers of TrueSpace -- www.caligari.com) for their
monthly (I think) contest for animations and stills created using
TrueSpace. I wonder if they'll favor the 2d 3d version, or the 3d 3d
version....

Computers are increasingly improving in terms of their sound
quality and capability. I certainly would not exclude the use of
computers in some form or another in synching images and audio
for a slide show or other presentation.
