The computer display system cannot handle 12 f/stops worth of contrast
(or even I believe the 6 stops of reversal film). However, your approach
should give the artist more choice over the compression of the tonal
range of the negative.
This is why television folks still shoot commercials and prime time
stuff on film... NTSC can only accomodate about 4 stops worth of
contrast, but the flying spot scanners used to transfer the film to tape
give you lots of control over how the end product looks (where the
compression occurs).
