Preservation of images

Unfortunately, archivality is not ensured simply by using any b&w
paper. There are many factors that go into the stability of b&w images,
some of which include:
1.a high quality paper with lots of silver to make up the image (RC is not it)
2.properly washing out all traces of fixer
3.mounting the image with a relatively stable adhesive
In mass production, as with many of the early views, some of these
corners may have been cut at certain points, but I believe the fading on
many views is due to airborn chemical contamination over the years, as well
as rough handling.
I support Bill's statements about making images in processes which
will allow future enjoyment, but not everyone will/should follow this lead.
I think simply to recognize that the inherent lifespans of certain
processses is quite short and if people have images which they are
particularily proud of they might consider making copies in a more archival
method.
