The last installment of my report on The 35mm Film Source Book by
Marc Levey apparently never made it to the list. I'll try again.
In addition to the charts and specs like those mentioned in my previous
posts, the 7 chapters (plus Appendix A through J) of Levey's book are
full of all sorts of information about 35mm films. There is a discussion
of what film is; how it is processed; how Kodachrome processing differs
from E-6 processing--including the "2nd exposure" used in the old E-4
process (now a chemical process in E-6); and use of filters for color
and black and white films.
Here are a few other tidbits:
-During calendar 1990, photographers took over 15 billion pictures.
95% were color prints.
-Which film is visually most impressive in projection
-Specific advice regarding airport X-rays, based on measurable data
-How to simply perform in-camera "flashing" of film to reduce contrast
-Eposure lattitude considerations, including differences between over
and under exposure latitude
-Film longevity
I'm pretty sure there was a discussion specifically about slides and
negatives that would answer some of the recent questions raised, but
I did not take down any of that information. :( Guess my crystal
ball was short-circuiting that day. ;)
All in all, the book seems like quite a valuable reference on 35mm
films. IHNA, but I would definitely recommend it (especially if an
updated edition can be found.) It was a little pricey for my personal
collection, unfortunately. It sure would be useful to have on hand to
(somewhat) authoritatively answer the various film questions that pop up
on the list from time to time!
