Richard, you said,

"Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I've never ever ever been able
to successfully view stereo pairs with the cross-eye technique. I can
and have always been able to parallel-view quite easily."

I learned to free view while having a conversation with my college-grad
daughter over the phone (looking at a small side-by-side stereo pair in
a book). She said "Just make your eyes go cross-eyed until you see three
pictures." I did. Then she said, "Look at the middle picture!" It
snapped into place and it was 3D! I was ecstatic!

However, the next time I tried it with the same pair, I got a pseudo
image, and I didn't understand why this happened. It was a puzzle. It
turned out I apparently could go into either cross-eyed or parallel-view
interchangeably, but when I finally got a middle image I didn't know
which mode I was in!

It isn't always easy. Erlys in Mill Valley
