Hint du jour

This one is from a '92 issue of Popular Photography,
in their 50 years ago section (ie it's from 1942).

The writer makes use of his overexposed Kodachrome
slides by mounting them with a glossy paper backing
(effectively turning them into prints) and gives them
away as miniatures.

I tried this with one of my Realist slides and it does
work to an extent. The slide need to be bright and
the dark parts fairly bright also (low contrast)
since the contrast increases due to the light
travelling thru the emulsion twice with this approach.
With a Realist or other 35 mm format slide you want
a fairly simple photo (like a head shot) since it
will probably be viewed without magnification.

You also have to have the slide tight against the
paper or you'll get shadows.

This may work best with overexposed medium format
slides since they are big enough to freeview quite
easily and could be viewed in a stereoscope once
converted into "prints" using this method. If I
ever overexpose any I'll give it a try. I haven't
yet, though I did once underexpose a whole roll due
to a variety of errors.
