Which one is the neutral Paul? "Hoopla" or "stunts"? :-)
I think Mr. Lowry is not commenting on 3D in general but 3D as
treated by the television networks. Does anybody doubt that 3d
is treated as a gimmick to increase ratings?
What better proof than this quote:

I am a bit skeptical about this:

In one sense, 3d is at the top of good 2d photography... First you must
have good 2d images and then let them be transformed with the magic of
3d... but 3d is (or should be) more than the icing on the cake...
