The way I have been shown to look at it is that one needs to eat anyway,
so at least you feel like you "belong" at the banquet - more so than
knocking about in a restaurant where the food is much more better.

The alternatives are - reading a book; going for a walk; watching the
in-room television; taking pictures at night; rendezvous-ing with a
friend who lives locally; having an adventure; etc...

So you can see that the banquet and accompanying speeches and psuedo
presentations can be a major event compare to the alternatives.

How much will you pay to eat?
