East of Eadie

I saw East of Eadie last week too. I can't add much to Eric Drysdale's
excellent review, except that I might have raved one notch higher. I'm still
so impressed at the basic idea of using a 3-d slide show as the
play-within-the-play to take a trip into a character's mind, to see the
character's own illusions illustrated. And Ray Dobbins's photography
achieves that illusory quality.
I could pick nits, like I wished for a better screen, and maybe one or two
slides could have been edited. But this is an amazingly successful overall
product.
With the 3-D show, the drag stars, the costumed musical numbers and all the
jokes, we had a great evening full of wows and laughs. I didn't think much
about family betrayal, addiction, and the high cost of repressed identity,
until later. Nice work, Ray.
"East of Eadie" by Ray Dobbins, starring Bette Bloolips Bourne, thru June 1
at Performance Space 122, 150 First Avenue, New York City, ph. 212-477-5288.
