I would guess that most likely they don't want people who were unable to get
glasses to avoid watching - also easy 2D viewability is one of the selling
points of Pulfrich.
The May 2 issue of Entertainment Weekly has an interesting article on the
show and the 3D episode (with some mention of the ABC shows), and also a
white-light hologram (apparently composite flat photos at different apparent
depths rather than full stereo) on the front cover.
The article comments that the special-effects budget for that episode was
$1.5 million, whereas a typical episode costs less than $1 million total,
so regardless of how the show turns out, they seem to have put a considerable
amount of effort into it.
