Sounds like someone has never seen good medium format stereo!  I've seen
views that show discernable depth with a standard stereo base of subjects
200 feet away! The key is razor sharp images to start with.

Subtile depth in stereo is like subtile color in color photos. it does not
have to blast out at you all the time of be effective.
