Re Teco Nimslo
Tim Stabler asks about the Teco-Nimslo in digest 2063 apparently for the
second time having asked a couple of months ago I must have missed that
post . I went to the trouble and cost of importing a Teco-Nimslo to the UK
and have not regreted it . First of all they apear to be the only source
left of "new" Nimslo's of any sort ,I already had a Nimslo but with the
distance involved went for a new Teco model rather than have mine converted
besides I think the "New" camera though a little more expensive is better
value for money. The camera is modified back to single full frame advance
which with a cover for the central lenses gives a realist type advance but
is still only half frame so you get the full 36 exposures again in stereo
so actualy 72. After the first 18 you are supposed to be able to reset the
counter again by pushing a ball point pen into a small hole in the camera
but this modification has been ommited on mine . They also make three
close-up lenses for the camera 6inch 12 inch and 30 inch the six inch uses
a 18mm pair the 12 inch and 30 inch a 36mm pair but I actualy use my 12
inch in the 6 inch holder as it is closer to the 1/30 rule then. The 6 inch
is still 3x that rule but still works quite well and is the lens I use the
most. The quality of the lenses is not as high as a conventional SLR close
up but I find I can get acceptable results with slide film but not so good
with prints .One of the advantages with these lenses is that they can be
left in place with the case closed , I tend to use mine just for close ups
now since I got my Fed for normal shots . When using a 36mm pair you have
to alternate the pairs to prevent double exposure which was a little
awkward with the original fitting as you had to take them of rotate them
and replace .Using the holes the manafacture made I attatched a couple of
strips of plastic to the camera which the lens holder can slide under and
can be slid back and forth over the lenses. Actualy I dont need to do this
now as I mentioned I use the 12 inch in the 6 inch holder and I broke my 30
inch a while ago and have not replaced it because I did not find it so
usefull. Although 30 inch it still seemed have a limited depth of field and
I found difficult to judge the distance .With the six and 12 inch I can
actualy carry a ruler with me but not 30 inch. The six inch rule I actualy
push through the space between the camera and case to hold in place, it
does appear slightly on the slide but I mount in RBT mounts the "wrong way
up" so that the bottom is masked of slightly removing the tip of the rule.
I also use the lense over the outer pair beneath the viewfinder to remove
horizontal parralax differences rather than the middle pair as the
manafacturers intended. To do this it was neccesary to extend the holder a
bit so that both unused lenses were still covered. In order to try to
reduce vertical parrallax the manafacturers supply small pieces cut from
the outside of fresnel lenses for the 6 and 12 inch , which when placed on
the viewfinder the correct way round are meant to deflect the view
downwards . But they stick on only by static electricity and I eventualy
lost both of mine and find I can cope without them. P.J.Homer
