3rd Rock

I had a delightful experience watching "3rd Rock".
They correctly advertised it as a "Special Effects" extravaganza, (put on
your 3D glasses now), rather than as a 'state of the art 3D presentation'.
While I perceived only 'some' clear moments of depth, (feathers, buildings,
roof-top antennas and clothes-lines, "world on a platter", flowers, etc.), I
was much more impressed with the artistry involved in combining of computer
and video images, well planned production numbers, integration of
story-lines and effects, the use of imagination and wit, and good writing!
(NBC had a budget that I can only 'dream of', and they were allowed to be
creative with it.)
For those, like myself, who deal with field-sequential video, I can see the
shortcomings of Pulfrich. There are things that F/S can achieve that are
far more impressive.
However, I feel that the greatest significance of the broadcast was
sociological, not technological.
I am thrilled that millions of viewers have just had a positive, successful,
truly fun video experience that they can associate with the idea of 3D.
