This makes a certain amount of sense to me, but will depend a bit on
the scene.  Also, it occurs to me that the suggestion by some others
to use the hyperfocal scale for 1-2 stops smaller has the equivalent
effect if infinity is in the scene.

Oh, of course that comes into play.  Particularly for shots which are
"marginally OK" (once we come to define what "OK" is), some people will
approve and some will not.  I'm hoping we can come up with some guidelines
for what "most people" would find OK.
