Are you sure about that? If showing single slides, of course you don't
turn on both lamps. I cannot imagine the TDC engineers to have been that
stupid! I was under the impression that the barn door bocks the light that
leaks when a stereo slide is being inserted in the carrier, because there
are no curtains in the carrier to do that. I have a TDC with barn door at
home (these are the older ones that come with the 7p carrier) and will
check it tonight.

Yes, but they also came with a different slide carrier, one that has the
internal curtains to block the light (but does not show 7p), same carrier
used in the 716 models.
