Normally, it does not make much difference, but in the case of the stereo
window, this is parallel to the film plane (assuming that it is created by
shifting the chips through a rectangular mask)
Of course, as it was pointed earlier, there are ways to create fancy
windows that lie in the 3-d space, but the traditional window is parallel
to the film plane.
Note that the "stereo window" is created by the borders of the image.
Window exists even in 2d pictures but it is more pronounced in 3d due
to the realism of the medium.
