Cleaning of Stereoviews

George Themelis wrote about my lack of concern
for future collectors of stereo views, like him self.
George, I am concerned and care very much for the
stereo cards that I have, both old and new. That is
the reason I clean the old ones that I consider historically
important and put them all in individual archival sleeves
to protect them. BUT unless there is a big change in
medicine in the next few years I very likely will not need
to be concerned in another 45 years or so
George wrote that I may be in the top 1-2%, age wise,
in Photo-3d> Does this make me a Photo-3d Stereo
Senior Citizen (P3dSSC)? If so, do we seniors get the
standard senior 10% discount on 3d sell items?
George also asked- Do different rules apply to stereo images
that you produced, versus stereo images that someone else
produced and you now collect?
I think you missed the point there George> I was trying to
show that my main interest is in the making of stereo cards,
not in collecting them. However, I do collect
cards pertaining to a very short list of subjects: Stereo cards
from Friedrich Brandt & Charles Junod who covered the
1863-64 war between Prussia & Denmark and cards
depicting Vietnam Veteran Memorials. from across the
US and around the world. This was the only US war (so far)
that both my son and I were able to participate in (I left Pleiku
in Aug 1968 after my 2d tour, he arrived in Pleiku in Dec 68) so I
have an interest in these memorials.
George also said something about me shooting B&W so the
images will last forever.
I don't know about that time frame, but I am trying to process and
mount them so they will last a long time. It might be better, for
archival
purposes to use wheat paste as the mounting medium, rather than
dry mount tissue. But wheat paste is a very messy way of dong things
and despite it being recommended by LAST (more on that organization
later) I haven't been able to find a good way to handle it.
Occasionally, to help insure that the images have a chance of surviving,
I will make multiple copies. George, you may recall my recent article
in STEREO WORLD "Personalities & Places" which I am working on
in connection with Columbus State University (Dick, I think this is what
you
meant). This project is open ended and just received a fresh "breath of
life" with another financial grant from CSU. I am doing this project in
3 copies of each stereo card, one for CSU, one for the OWH Stereo
Library and one for myself. Maybe one set will survive.
Now a return to our regular scheduled programming "Cleaning of
Stereoviews"
According to George Themelis, he puts nose grease on his
transparencies, to solve some of the scratch problems.
I wonder how this nose grease affects the archival qualities of
his transparencies, which already have a disclaimer on the
box with words to the effect that color dyes may change over time
and slides are not guaranteed against changes in color.
If the nose grease does affect the archival qualities then I assume
it has to be cleaned off as in"cleaning of stereoviews". My question
is, since distilled water won't work for this procedure, what chemical
do you use that will not affect the aforementioned unstable dyes?
