Cleaning of Stereoviews

Continuing the saga as to whether Bert
should clean his stereoviews or not.

The remark was made that cleaning may
cut down on the life of the stereoviews.

This may be true, but's review the "bidding" .
The stereoview I cleaned was made in 1862.
which makes it 135 years old. I am now 66
years old , so if it lasts another 45 years or so
I don't think I will need to be concerned about it
after that,

I have not been in stereo as long as some of you,
having started in 1973. I consider myself a
producer, not a collector, although I have 600
or so old stereographs that I have accumulated
over the years.

I THINK there are two kinds of stereograph collectors,
those who collect for collecting's sake and want to say
they have all 1200 that "Rudolph Schmidlapp" shot
while climbing Pike's Peak with his wife on his back
and those like myself who want to use, view and enjoy
the moment in time captured in the old stereographs.
The latter group will tend to want to clean their old
stereographs because this makes them more enjoyable
to view.

PLEASE NOTICE THAT I STARTED THE LAST PARAGRAPH
WITH "I THINK'

One more thing- I don't know where the "cleaning with ammonia "
came from. Christine Young recommends only water, either
distilled or saliva>
