Thanks, Bill, for a most interesting thread which is "vital" for camera
collectors (pun intended).
As some of you may remember, we had a similar discussion several times
before and I mentioned that I use "Wundbenzin" here in Germany. We also
had some trouble figuring out what this could be in other parts of the
world (without success).
In the meantime, I found out more about my favorite cleaner, "Wundbenzin":
it's a specially well-cleaned type of benzine with a low boiling
temperature (about 40 to 70 degrees Celsius at 101 kPa. It's also called
"Petrol=E4ther" (Petrol Ether). This may answer the question why it's call=
ed
Ether in the Netherlands ...
Petrol Ether is a mixture of Pentane (C5 H12) and Hexane (C6 H14).
Bill listed Hexane - but not Pentane. Is the latter more or less dangerous=
and a better/worse solvent than Hexane? The chemical gurus un this list
may have an answer.
