Tom Martin reminds us to participate in the "After Hours" 3D Photo
Competition and lists a number of ideas:

>People or animals sleeping
>People at evening events (dining, drinking, dancing, sporting events)
>Animals that are only active at night
>City lights and store fronts
>People illuminated by street lamps or porch lights
>Evening rituals (brushing your teeth, watching TV, reading your email...

To motivate the "big hitters" he adds:

>Now a little while ago, there were several people on the List boasting
>about how much film they shot last year. Unfortunately, I haven't seen
>many entries from that crowd.

DrT (recognized champion in the film-burning race) replies:

Maybe that's because we don't have any pictures of sleeping cats or dogs!

The purpose of a slide competition assignment is to motivate people to
enter. I am sorry, but the rules that you have placed in your competition,
just turn me off. First, you picked a very difficult subject. Sure, I can
sneak into my kid's room and snap a flash picture at 2:30 am before I go to
bed. Is that the kind of picture I want to show to others? How about my
wife brushing her teeth? Not exciting enough. Am I called to produce 4
pictures like that?

Second, AND MOST IMPORTANT, you placed the unreasonable (IMO) restriction
that the pictures must be taken within the last year. I looked over my
several thousands of pictures from my 88 rolls this past year and could not
find a single one that fit the subject and is worth showing to others.

Thrid, AND EVEN MOST IMPORTANT, I am only given an 1-2 month advance notice
to go and shoot this assignment.

As I said, the purpose of slide competitions are to encourage people to
participate. Usually, they are of the "Open" variety and perhaps give
special awards to some specific subjects. Those competitions that are
based solely on an assignment, usually pick a popular subject/activity and
they give ample notice (usually one year in advance). I have NOT seen
ANY competition that puts restriction on when was the picture taken (i.e.
within the last 12 months).

I short, don't be surprised if you don't seen any pictures from me in your
competition. I had every intention to participate but I am not in the mood
to go and find "animals that are only active at night" and stereo
photograph them within the next month.

Best regards,

George Themelis
