Good morning Lincoln!
You asked:
>.. depth of field preview. Does any one know how that works?
The camera lens would normally be at it's widest opening, giving you it's
brightest image and shortest depth of focus. As you depress the trigger half
way (I assume this would be your preview function) the aperture closes to
it's set value.
>.. would it probably be a bad idea to get an slr that has auto focus...
I like auto focus because I generally prefer a narrow range of focus. Auto
focus allows me to shoot on the fly and still get my subject in sharp focus;
something I can't do nearly as well with a manual focus. It's been my
experience that with auto focus, I almost always get my subject. My Minolta
seems to be pretty darned good at reading my mind, though it did take a
little time in the beginning for us to get to know each other.
Many on this list seem to like *everything* to be in focus. That's not my
style. If it's yours, you may have no need for an auto focus.
