A tapered cable release should work fine on a straight threaded
socket. The other way around (a straight threaded cable release in a
tapered socket) would cause problems. The reason most cable releases
are tapered now a days is that they will fit in both styles of socket.
If you really want a straight threaded cable release I believe that
Leica (or one of the other "more money than I know what to do with"
brands :) still makes cameras with straight threaded sockets, and
sells cable releases for them.
