In my view, part of the "message" of a painting or a photograph of a
particular subject is "look at how interesting this is." Simply by making
the choice to paint or photograph a subject, the artist is holding it up for
the viewer to look at and, in effect, saying: "Look at this!" This doesn't
mean that every subject automatically becomes interesting by virtue of being
photographed. (Let's not have that debate again!) But I do believe it is
the skill and creativity of the photographer, rather than any intrinsic
"interesting-ness" of the subject, which makes the photograph.
