Peter Gowland and 3d
I have a copy of Peter Gowland's hard to find book "The Art and
Technique of Stereo Photography" for sale in sell-3d. Since
commentary is discouraged in sell-3d, I would like to post
some comments here:
This hard-to-find book is written by Peter Gowland, the well-known
glamour photographer, published in 1954. Hard bound, 128 pages,
contains the most glamour/nude pictures ever found in a book about
stereo photography!!!
Why would a glamour photographer write a book on stereo photography?
My guess is that during the peak of stereo photography, it looked
as if every one should get into stereo or be left behind. I am not
sure how long Peter Gowland shot 3d, but my guess is "not too long".
Also, from the illustrations in this book it appears that his
favorite camera is the Wollensak.
In addition to the beautiful models (pictured almost excessively
in 2d), the book contains a number of interesting pictures and
chapters, including some hyperstereo bars designed by inventor
Mr. Clinton W. Hough of Pasadena, California, and a chapter
on "Trick Photography and Special Effects" by, who else, the
famous trick stereophotographer Tommy Thomas.
-- George Themelis
PS. The book originally came with 5 stereo pairs by Peter
Gowland, for mounting and viewing, in the back. The pairs
are missing from the book that I have for sale, as well as
from my own personal copy and every one I have seen. :(
