This strikes a responsive chord with me as well. One of my most
rewarding projects in 1986 was to make a stereo photographic record
(about 400 good stereo images -- I've forgotten the exact count) of the
Vancouver Expo 86, mostly exteriors with a few interiors. This was a
colorful Disneyland for adults, made for stereo photography. Obviously,
this historical set of structures has been dismantled and cannot be
enjoyed today, except for the Canada Pavilion (now a convention center),
the IMAX theater, the mostly glass British Columbia building, and the
"Roundhouse," a transportation history museum.
However, I believe that I got pictures of nearly every building,
including shots with an identifiable building in the background, except
for the South Sea Islands pavilion and the rather open-air Crafts
pavilion that was at the southwest corner of the expo grounds. If
someone has pictures of the two sites I missed and would like to donate
copies of those or any other views to the collection, I would certainly
give due credit in the documentation that will accompany the collection.
(I wish I could locate Bill Carter, formerly of the Stereo Club of
Southern California -- he had several gorgeous hypers of the expo that
should be represented in the collection by good copies credited to him.)
My eventual plan is to scan the printed map of the Expo grounds into my
computer (I haven't got a scanner yet) and, with numbered symbols
indexed to the slides, show on the map where each picture was taken and
which way the camera was facing. I would also include an audio tape for
a show to be assembled from the more interesting slides selected by
number from the collection. If there is a historical society of some
kind in Vancouver that would be interested and would take care of the
collection, I would probably donate the slides and a viewer to them in
my will or in some kind of living trust arrangement. Jamie, do you know
of such an organization?
Cordially,
