Sounds like a good test would be to try it with the lamps "pulled".  If
it works that way, then install a 3-way switch (like Compco's come with)
in the TDC -- if trying to fix the motor itself doesn't prove fruitful.

Or use a heavier gauge cord and/or smaller lamps.  :-)
