I had exactly the same problem. This is a copy from my post about two years
ago. Hope it helps.

That's absolutely true. The plastic take -up spool us worthless. The plastic
breaks where it is connected to the spindle with a little screw. 
I managed to solve the problem permanently by:
     -remove the top and the bottom an take out the spindle and spool
     -use a saw and make a groove in the plastic spool (a channel for the a
metal pin)
     -drill a 1mm hole right trough the spindle
     -put a metal pin trough it and secure it with a drop of glue or paint

        -----^-----   ^ represents the groove. This is the exact spot to drill 
            | |         the spindle and afterwards put the metal pin. The
deeper                         the groove the better. 

I'm not that good in asci drawings but I hope you'll get the idea.
