Hi all,
I've seen many 3-D films (most in stereo, of course) and most of them are of
value only because the 3-D effects. Out of the 30 or so films I've seen, I
know most of them are *unavailable* for showing. I know because I tracked
down the owners of the rights for a couple of 3-D film festival I did in the
Canary Islands several years ago. A 3-D film festival has ONE big problem:
getting 3-D prints, either good or bad.
Here goes a list of films that are likely available for showing (that at
least have a known print in existence):
es=english soundtrack
--APE (screening print in mint condition, non-censored european release
version, es, good 3-D, awfull production values)
--Love in 3-D (or something, telecine quality print in German HARDCORE
version only, not good for festivals, but great for private screening ;-)
--The Bubble (bad condition print, an outdated sci-fi B movie, awesome 3-D,
a MUST SHOW, fun enough)
--Creature from the Black Lagoon (35mm anaglyphic print, es)
--It came from Outer Space (Anaglyhpic, es)
--Dial M for Murder (70mm-35mm prints available, little 3-D, GREAT film)
--House of Wax (70mm-35mm print available, es, need I say more?)
--Flesh for Frankenstein (several 35mm prints available, es, GREAT 3-D, fun
enough to win the public, A MUST, specially uncensored European print)
--Friday 13th Part III 3-D (mint condition prints, es, good 3-D, fun enough)
--Jaws 3-D (mint condition prints, es, OK 3-D, good value production)
--Treasure of the 4 crowns (good condition print available, spanish
soundtrack, lots of 3-D, fun enough)
--Sea Dreams (mint condition prints, es and Thai!, too much parallax,
outdated, but fair, about 20min short)
--Relieve Navarro (about 15min short, BORING, OK 3-D, no language
soundtrack, good print)
--3-D Safari (about 20min short, BORING, OK 3-D, english, french, spanish,
german versions, mint print)
--What the Butler Saw (mint 35mm print, better than average sex comedy, fun
enough, 1.33:1 over under format, SWEDISH soundtrack, all-behind the
window-just ONE effect 3-D, but correct parallax).
--The Stewardesses (VERY bad condition 35mm anamorphic side/side print, es,
just bearable)
--Domo Arigato (print SHOULD be available, it just seems to have been LOST
in the wharehouse, VERY boring, good 3-D at times)
--Starchaser: The legend of Orin (english and some oriental, Korean? prints,
good 3-D, animated cartoons, good film, A MUST)
--Coming at Ya (Spanish print in existence, movie in legal battle over
rights). A must show for the number and use of 3-D effects. Fun enough
spaguetti western.
--Nightmare in Elm Street VI. Anaglyphic portions, fun enough.
Some other titles, probably not available, from memory:
--SpaceHunter, Adventures in the forbidden zone. I would play it, good
production values.
--Amityville 3-D: just like all these horror films, this one is NOT worse
(plus it's got Meg Ryan;-). Fair 3-D.
--The man who wasn't there. So-so comedy, not worth it.
--Venus. Just like Emmanuelle, it's watchable and 3-D is EXCELENT.
--The Mask. B-series example, B/W with some GOOD anaglyphic shots.
--Metalstorm. Nothing good on this one.
--Money from Home. Jerry Lewis got to be fun, despite the 3-D.
--Parasite. Nothing good on this one.
--Rottweiler. Nothing good on this one.
--Sexcalibur. Worst ever hardcore, parrallax champion, measured in FEET.
--Taza: Son of Cochise. One of the choices as a "good" western film and
good use of 3-D.
--Hanna Lee. Dull western, VERY flat.
--Hit the Road Running, Hot Heir, Tales of the Third Dimension: not
available.
--Emmanuelle IV. Just like I, II or III, could be available (rights held by
Canal+ France)
The only movie I would say is REALLY good in 3-D that I know of is Dial M
for Murder, and it is a VERY flat movie. Oscar for best 3-D goes to
Frankenstein and Comin at Ya. I have seen two or three other Chinese films
that I can not recall the title of. These were large kung-fu productions
with AWESOME 3-D and lots of action. I would play them if they were
available.
