Re: Kodachrome

I have used Kodachrome 25 almost all the time and Kodachrome II before
that. Often really fresh K25 will exhibit a greenish cast if shot and
processed promptly. I like to either buy my film long before I'll be
using it, or even out-of-date film. I'm not sure that using
professional K25 will guarantee a neutral balance, although it should.
When the late Modern Photography last compared slide films before they
folded, they couldn't locate any professional Kodachrome that wasn't
greenish. Presumably that problem has been solved (?).
But assuming that the processing is consistent and the film not too
fresh, my results are pretty consistently neutral, at least with my
lenses and viewing systems. K25 should be processed promptly, or else
latent images will tend to shift toward magenta after a few months. I
haven't noticed any consistent differences over the years in terms of
grain size or sharpness; obviously expanses of solid color don't hide
grain as well as detailed areas of the image and this may make
comparison difficult. I have had my share of processing problems
(don't get me started!), but Kodak/Kodalux/Qualex/Whatever processing
in the last few years seems more consistent than it had been. We'll
see how well they do with this year's vacation slides!
I have read complaints about E6 film color shifts due inconsistent
processing, so apparently color shift problems can crop up anywhere.
