Yes that is a valid situation, but is NOT to achieve a desired
effect as the original poster was trying to imply.
And this is only valid for small angles.

Merits of converging? Can you be more specific. What merits?

If there are stereo photographers who, for one reason
or another, use cheap viewers are happy with what they 
get, you'd say that it is an acceptable practice???
