Old timers might remember that a ways back there were commercial
versions of this type of monopod using a chain attached to a tripod
screw. As Mike describes, the chain falls to the ground, you step on it
and tension it with a bit of upward camera pressure, and voila!

You can still find them occasionally in junk bins. I've used them, they
work pretty well for something which you can stick in your pocket. I
don't think you'd have much luck with 2+ seconds of time exposure,
however...
