Re: Converging lenses, or Breaking Rules

I think Greg's inadvertant message to the list said it all. But
here's a possible reason for breaking the rules, converging lenses,
mounting pseudo or with vertical error: to create a rogues gallery
of what to avoid, with illustrations of exactly why they should be
avoided, as part of a tutorial to newbies. In this case, each
occurrence of a broken rule will be the very reason why that
particular image is of interest. By probing the rules in this way,
the student can see the degree of deviation from the norm that each
type of error causes. E.g., the mounting of two entirely
dis-similar images (say, a seashore with a meat-packing plant) can be
seen to create an effect similar to a common double-exposure--two
conflicting images that completely overlap but can be perceived
individually by a mind. Or, mounting a good stereo pair but with one
image rotated by a degree or two about the center results in an image
that can't be perceived as two DIFFERENT images, but instead causes
pain or disorientation to the point of revulsion. Such images would
be created for a very good artistic reason, and could be very useful,
if only in convincing those who question the rules that there are
good reasons for the rules. They could also demonstrate to the
greyhairs that not all rules are equally sacred. (I could contribute
some of my early mounting attempts to get the collection of rogues
started! :) )
