Stereo Mounting - Basic Definition & Procedure

I see Gabriel has the day off today... So here is some food for thought...

I did a little bit of research on what has been written about mounting
stereo images and it appears that, while there are quite a few details, no
one has defined the objective and basic procedure. Here is what I came up
with:

Objective: Position the two images in a way that it is *natural*,
*comfortable* and *pleasing* to the eyes.

Definition No.1: Horizontal direction (x) is parallel to the line
connecting the eyes. Vertical direction (y) is parallel
                  to the horizontal direction.

Definition No.2: Homologous or corresponding points are a pair of point
(one in left and one in right image) that correspond to \
                  the same physical object.

Procedure for mounting a stereo pair for parallel viewing:

1. Place left image in left side and right image in right side.

2. Align images so that all homologous points lie in the horizontal
   direction.

3. Adjust horizontal spacing for correct infinity separation and trim/mask
   for best stereo window.

As expected, the juice is in the details....
