What does this do?

I hope everyone that went to the convention had a great time. I am very
envious. I will be there next year!

I did find a stereo related item at a local camera shop. It is labeled
"Film Identification Unit for Realist Camera   Model ST 523" and has the 
Realist logo on the back.

It has a black metal finish and folds out into a "U". One leg of the 
"U" could hold a 35mm film chip. The other leg contains a small lens. 
There is a rim on the lens that looks like Realist filters could be attached.
The film chip would be held against the flat black metal so you could not 
see through the chip.
 
I can't determine what this could be used for.
