Paul, you are far off... The film identifier is essentially a close
up lens with present focusing.  You stick a card with your name and
address to use the one blank frame in the beginning before you 
advance for the second time and take a picture of the card.  This
identifies you as the owner of the film (in case the film gets mixed 
up).

Some people have used the unit as a close-up lens to take close
up pictures with the Realist (you need to switch the unit which
snaps to the lens from one lens to the other and shift the camera
in between).
